Choosing Your Damascus Steel Pattern

Damascus Steel is prized for its distinctive patterns, created through the forging and layering of different steels. No two Damascus Steel rings are ever identical, meaning every ring carries its own unique grain, movement and character.

At True North Forge, we offer six carefully selected Damascus patterns: Esk, Bervie, Crynoch, Findon, Cowie and Dee. Each has its own appearance, ranging from subtle flowing grain to bold concentric formations.

This guide will help you compare the patterns side by side and choose the one that best suits your style. Whether you prefer a clean, understated look or a more striking pattern with strong visual movement, there is a Damascus pattern to suit every taste.

CRYNOCH

Crynoch features a gentle twist during the forging process, creating flowing movement throughout the pattern. Wider sections gradually transition into tighter grain, giving the ring a natural sense of motion while still retaining a classic Damascus appearance.
Crynoch is an excellent choice for those who appreciate traditional Damascus Steel but would like a little more visual movement and character within the pattern.

FINDON

Findon uses the same layered Damascus Steel as Crynoch but without the twist. This creates a straighter, more linear grain pattern where the wider and tighter layers remain clearly visible throughout the ring.

The result is a clean, understated Damascus pattern that highlights the layered steel itself without the flowing movement seen in Crynoch. For customers seeking a more subtle and traditional appearance, Findon is often a popular choice.

ESK

Esk shares some visual similarities with Crynoch, featuring movement within the pattern and subtle transitions between grain directions. However, the grain is significantly tighter and more condensed, creating a more intricate appearance throughout the ring.

Small breaks within the pattern help create movement and variation, giving Esk a distinctive balance between flowing Damascus character and fine detailed grain.

Esk is an excellent choice for those who enjoy the appearance of Crynoch but prefer a tighter, more detailed pattern.

BERVIE

Bervie is our most condensed Damascus pattern. The grain remains consistently tight throughout the ring, with no large openings or breaks in the pattern.

This creates a bold, highly detailed appearance that showcases the layered steel at every angle. The uninterrupted grain gives Bervie a strong visual presence while maintaining the distinctive character that makes Damascus Steel so sought after.

For customers looking for maximum pattern density and detail, Bervie is often the standout choice.

DEE

Dee features irregular concentric circles that form naturally throughout the steel. The pattern appears organic and unpredictable, with circular formations of varying sizes flowing across the surface of the ring.

No two sections are quite the same, creating a pattern full of movement and character. Dee is often chosen by customers who appreciate a more natural, untamed appearance and want a Damascus pattern that feels unique from every angle.

COWIE

Cowie shares the same concentric circle style as Dee but with a much more organised and uniform appearance. The circular formations are more consistent throughout the ring, creating a stronger sense of structure and repetition within the pattern.

The result is a bold and eye-catching Damascus design that showcases the circular formations clearly while maintaining a balanced and intentional appearance.

For those who love concentric Damascus patterns but prefer a cleaner, more ordered look, Cowie is often the perfect choice.
