Can a Titanium Medical Implant Be Turned Into a Ring?
It’s a question we’re being asked more and more often.
For many families, a Titanium hip replacement, surgical plate or medical implant feels deeply personal. It was part of somebody’s journey, carried through years of life, recovery and resilience. Understandably, some people wonder whether that Titanium could be transformed into a memorial ring or keepsake.
The honest answer is a little more complicated than a simple yes or no.
At True North Forge, we currently do not offer rings made from reclaimed medical implants, but not because the idea lacks meaning. In truth, the emotional significance behind these requests is something we completely understand.
The reality is that Titanium behaves very differently from precious metals like gold or silver, and there are important technical and workshop limitations that make the process far more difficult than many people realise.
Titanium Cannot Simply Be Melted Down Like Gold
One of the biggest misconceptions is that Titanium can be melted and repoured in the same way as traditional jewellery metals.
In reality, Titanium melts at extremely high temperatures and reacts aggressively with oxygen when molten. Proper Titanium casting requires specialist industrial equipment including vacuum or argon-controlled environments to avoid contamination and brittleness.
Most high-quality Titanium jewellery is not cast at all. Instead, it is machined from solid Titanium bar stock using lathes and specialist tooling.
This is also how our own Titanium rings are made at True North Forge.
Because of this, a medical implant cannot realistically be melted down and repurposed within a traditional handmade jewellery workshop environment.
Medical Implants Are Also Very Different to Jewellery Stock
Even when an implant is made from Titanium, it is not necessarily equivalent to jewellery-grade Titanium bar stock.
Medical implants may contain:
different Titanium alloys
surface treatments or coatings
textured finishes designed for bone integration
complex shapes and construction methods
Many implants are engineered for medical performance rather than machinability into jewellery. Some are also extremely difficult to cut, reshape or safely work with consistently.
As a small handmade workshop, we have to be realistic about what can be responsibly and consistently offered to customers.
Some Specialists Can Repurpose Implants Without Melting
There are specialist makers internationally who work directly with medical implants by physically reshaping sections of the original implant into jewellery rather than melting the material itself however, this is not a process we currently offer at True North Forge.
Alternative Ways to Create a Meaningful Memorial Ring
While we cannot currently create rings from reclaimed Titanium implants themselves, there are still deeply personal ways to carry somebody close.
Many customers instead choose to:
incorporate ashes within a memorial ring
use inherited precious metal wedding bands within a new design
add hidden memorial elements beneath an inlay
include engraving or handwriting from a loved one
Our Titanium Ring with Heirloom Precious Metal Inlay allows customers to incorporate precious metal from an inherited wedding ring into a new handmade piece, preserving part of the original jewellery within the new design.
For customers wanting a more private memorial, our Hidden Within Memorial Ring securely seals ashes beneath a solid precious metal inlay so nothing visible remains on the surface.
Handmade in Scotland
Every True North Forge ring is handmade to order in our workshop in Scotland using carefully selected materials and traditional machining techniques.
We believe memorial jewellery should be approached honestly, respectfully and with complete transparency about what is and is not possible to repurpose medical impants within a small handmade workshop.
If you ever have questions about a sentimental material or memorial idea, you are always welcome to contact us and we’ll happily talk it through with you.
